How Do Caregivers Develop Social and Emotional Skills With Their Children?

1. Background of the Research 

            In early childhood and school-based education, social and emotional (SE) skills are important foundation for positive educational outocmes, behaviors, and well-being of the children. This research pointed out the vital role of caregivers in supporting these skills through collaboration between families and schools. However, there is a gap how caregivers actively support in developing SE skill at home and what types of support they need from schools and other organizations, which examines caregivers’ perspectives, practices, and support needs concering with children’s social and emotional development.

 

2. Research Objectives

 

The research objectives of this study are to: 

  •       examine how caregivers’ motivations on their children’s social and emotional skill development work.
  •      explore the way of caregivers helping their children’s social and emotional skills to develop at home.
  •       identify the methods of supports and resources caregivers find valuable for strengthening their children’s social and emotional learning.

 

3. Research Methodology 

 

            The study used a survey-based research design mixed by quantitative and qualitative methods. Data were collected from participants such as parents and caregivers through an onlinequestionnaire about confidence, frequency, motivations, practices, and perceived supports related to social and emotional (SE) skill development. The responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis of open-ended answers.  

 

4. Research Finding 

 

The study found that there were caregivers who supported confidently their children’s social and emotional skill through conversations, real-life discussions, and modeling behaviors instead of structured lessons. On the other hand, there was a small amount of caregivers who did not focus on SE skills. the perspective of caregivers on SE skills is concluded as important, especially goal-settingm emotional regulation, and social interaction. Overall, the finding of this research pointed out strong caregiver engagement in SE skill development is a essential factor to consider while raising children.
