THE ROLE OF RISK MANAGEMENT IN IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION IN ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS

1. Background of the Study

    Education plays a fundamental role in developing human resources and national progress. Academic institutions are expected to provide high-quality education to produce competent, adaptive, and globally competitive graduates. However, educational institutions face increasingly complex challenges, including technological advancements, policy changes, financial limitations, curriculum mismatches, governance issues, and global uncertainties.

    These internal and external challenges create various risks that may hinder the achievement of institutional goals and reduce educational quality if not properly managed. Therefore, adopting a systematic risk management approach has become increasingly important in educational governance. Risk management enables institutions to identify, analyze, and mitigate potential risks proactively, ensuring sustainability, resilience, and continuous quality improvement in academic institutions.


2. Research Objective

    The study aims to examine the role of risk management in improving the quality of education in academic institutions through a systematic literature review approach.

4. Research Scope

    The study focuses on analyzing scholarly literature related to risk management practices in educational institutions and their contribution to improving educational quality. The literature reviewed spans from 2015 to 2025 and includes peer-reviewed journal articles, academic books, research reports, and official publications.
The scope covers:
  • Types of risks in academic institutions (operational, academic, financial, technological, reputational, and safety risks)
  • Risk mitigation strategies
  • Supporting and inhibiting factors in implementing risk management

  • Effective strategies for integrating risk management into institutional systems


5. Research Methodology

    This study employs a qualitative approach using a systematic literature review method. Data were collected from reputable academic databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus, ProQuest, and JSTOR.

    The researchers used keywords such as “risk management in education,” “education quality improvement,” and “academic risk.” The selected literature was analyzed using thematic synthesis to categorize findings based on risk types, mitigation strategies, implementation trends, and their impact on educational quality.


6. Research Findings

    The findings indicate that risk management significantly contributes to improving educational quality in academic institutions. Key findings include:

  1. Improved Governance: Institutions implementing structured risk management systems demonstrate better governance practices and accountability.
  2. Data-Based Decision Making: Risk analysis supports informed strategic decisions.
  3. Organizational Resilience: Institutions become more adaptive and prepared for crises, including disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
  4. Enhanced Institutional Culture: Building a risk-aware organizational culture strengthens collaboration and proactive problem-solving.
  5. Effective Strategies Identified: Successful risk management involves systematic risk identification, assessment, mitigation planning, communication, monitoring, evaluation, and technology integration.

    Overall, integrating risk management into educational policy and governance systems enhances institutional sustainability, competitiveness, and quality improvement.
